Sixes - the fastest and most furious form of cricket, was born at Chiang Mai. This annual tournament began in 1988 with 16 teams competing from 8 different countries and has grown to become one of the major sporting and social events in the Chiang Mai calendar. Although primarily an amateur tournament, over the years the Chiang Mai Sixes has been graced by some major figures in the world game including Clive Rice, Mike Gatting, Dermot Reeve, Graeme Pollock, Neil Foster, Alvin Kallicharran, Dennis Lillee, Geoff Lawson, JK Lever, Mike Proctor and many more.

The Chiang Mai Sixes Mission

The social scene at the Chiang Mai Sixes is an integral part of the week

The Chiang Mai Sixes main mission is 'making friends through the sport of cricket', and the social side of the tournament is treated with the same enthusiasm as the cricket. Teams come from all over the world (the 2009 tournament sees 13 countries represented) and the atmosphere at the competition is friendly with an enormous amount of socialising!

Despite carousing to the early hours of the morning the standard of cricket is often extremely good. Sixes cricket demands good tight bowling and explosive batting making it an extremely entertaining game to watch.

The Chiang Mai Sixes also has a charitable side raising large amounts of money each year for the development of cricket among Chiang Mai schools. The tournament has been the major supporter of the Chiang Mai Schools Cricket Alliance (CMSCA) which was formed in 2000 and has developed the game in a number of local schools to great effect. A number of local school cricketers have gone on to represent Thailand at a national level and in 2007 a young Thai team, Thai Thevada, played in the main Sixes tournament for the first time aquitting themselves very creditably and taking some impressive scalps.

The Rules of Sixes Cricket

Big hitting, or no is the order of the day!

The main rules of cricket all apply to Sixes play but with some modification to insure a fast and furious game.

Each team fields just six players.

Each innings is just five overs long

Each member of the fielding team with the exception of the wicketkeeper must bowl an over.

Batsmen must retire after passing 30 runs.

Wides are heavily penalised by runs rather than an extra ball.

Sixes cricket is characterised by big hitting and is highly entertaining to watch especially when accompanied by a few beers.
